  • Trying to identify a dongle (ES166/E166?)

    Hello,

I have purchased a new head unit from a fairly popular Chinese manufacturer. I've been one from the same manufacturer for the last 12 months with 3G using a fairly standard unlocked O2 dongle (E1752Cu) which worked quite well It uses a Qualcomm MSM 6290 chipset.

Anyway, the manufacturer always said I should really use their dongle (ES166) on the old head unit, yet this one seemed to work fine on the old head unit..

Anyway, the new head unit arrived on Tuesday, and the O2 dongle doesn't work on this one and I can't seem to unlock the firmware which I figured might help but the update wouldn't run due to some update error.

Anyway, I've decided I may as well try a new one... unfortunately, they want £22 for their 'compatible' dongle (which is a rip off)... but in all truth it just looks like a fairly generic dongle, but I guess I need to know the Chipset so I can buy a cheaper alternative that would probably... I just wondered if anyone could help me recognize it from the design or case... or are the cases just generic too? If so, I'll just have to pay, just annoying as £22 is extortinate!!

    Erisin's ES166:

The closest I found looks wise was this on eBay:

This uses the MSM 6280 which may be the required chipset, but I don't know.

I'll be really grateful for any help you can provide.

You can try to detect it by dc-unlocker and check what will be detected on software. Software download here - https://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/get/AHABepaj

No no, I'm trying to identify it on looks only. I don't own the dongle lol. I just wondered if that one on eBay which is only £11 (the one recommended by the manufacturer is £22) would likely work.

Is it possible to identify by looks lol? Are the cases just generic?

Well if model is not written on modem itself then it is mostly not really possible to tell its exact model. Many modems now have common/same case.

You could check network providers website that dongle is locked to, usually they advertise modems, maybe you'll notice yours there.
