  • Huawei E5220 unlocked but will not work with other SIMS

I successfully used DC-Unlocker to unlock a Huawei E5220 wi-fi modem that was on the three network in the UK.

However, when I put in an O2 SIM card that works successfully in another modem, it does not work and the signal strength display on the device lights up red rather than green. When I enter the admin panel at http://192.168.1.1/ I get the following message:

    ---
    No coverage

The device cannot currently connect to the network as there is no signal. To get the best from your device place it where you have the best signal(5 signal bars). Placing the device by a window with the strongest signal can significantly improve your Mobile Broadband experience.
    ---

This is not correct. The same O2 SIM card works fine in another modem (not wi-fi). This device will work when I put the original three SIM back in.

I have reconnected to DC-Unlocker and this confirms it is unlocked when I search for the modem.

I note from the admin panel that the device is locked to 3G networks - it is not possible to alter this. Although this might be a problem in other locations, here the O2 network is 3G, so that is not the cause of the problem. My phone is also on O2 and this indicates there is 3G coverage.

    Any ideas?

Inserting another sim into device is not enough for it to work, you must add new profile along with new apn settings that are received from operator you try to connect to, only then your device will operate with your new sim.

The problem is not the profile

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply, but it has nothing to do with the APN settings. I have already entered those. I have used the same settings that work with the O2 SIM in another modem.

The problem is that with any SIM card other than a three SIM in this device it gives the error message included in my original posting: it says there is no coverage for the network. The signal strength display on the device is in red. The signal strength accessed via a browser and http://192.168.1.1/ has zero bars and says there is no signal.

There is an O2 network - and I can connect to it no problem using another device - but with the O2 SIM in this device, it does not detect it. Without being able to connect to the O2 network it is unable to even pass any login details.

Why won't an E5220 device unlocked with dc-unlocker detect other networks? What can I do to make it work?

I wonder if it has something to do with three software on the device.

I've seen some other threads here where people have been unable to connect as they cannot change the connection mode from 3G - this is blanked out. I think O2 coverage here is 3G, but maybe not.

Then, most likely, your web panel/gui is branded and not usable with other operator cards, which would require to flash device with firmware that would have generic web panel/gui.

            Thanks for this suggestion.

Does DC-Unlocker have a FAQ explaining that this is necessary on some devices and how to complete the unlocking process so the device can be used on other networks?

If not, can you explain where can I find such firmware and how to flash the device with it?

            Thanks in advance.

How to use dc-unlocker you can watch here: https://www.dc-unlocker.com/tutorials
Sorry, we do not have firmware files. Also, we do not provide flashing service.

I think I have changed the setting to auto using firefox.

In firefox right click on the "3G only" and select "inspect element"

a panel should appear below that show <select id="preferred_mode_select" disabled="">

Delete the disabled="" part and the box should become active for you to select "auto" and then apply.

I have set mine to auto and it stays after a restart of the device.

I have not been able to get to a non 3G area yet to test though
