Is it save to unlock E160 while being online with E160 (no dongle)?

Hi,

currently my (locked) E160 ist my only source to connect to the Internet.

Can I go through the unlocking procedure while being online, or do I get a password or something like that when connecting to your server and then go through the unlocking procedure later offline?

I do not want to waste my credits in case something goes wrong.

By the way, a short (written) description of the unlocking procedure would be helpful, the video tutorial is a bit blurred and not clear about where the internet connection comes from (usb stick or cable connection)

Personally I have had experience to unlock modem-dongle "on the street" with my laptop. I have used E170 as modem connected to network, and E156G modem that need to be unlocked.
Before this operation, you need to connect each of them to different USB port to install driver/software (one at time).
Dashboard ask you to choose what modem must used as network connection.

Yes, connection is required if you have dc-unlocker dongle or if you are a simple user of Dc-unlocker software.
You speak of E160 made by Huawei that can be unlocked via CODE, than you no need of interent connection

You can generate the unlock code using dc-unlocker software. But be sure your modem ask for it. You can generate when you are online with the modem.
Unlock code can be generated only for most supported Huawei modems (other manufacturer modems can not generate it). In order to generate the unlock code you need to start dc-unlocker software , select your modem manufacturer (Huawei). Then go to unlock tab and select “generate unlock code by imei”. Enter the imei number which you can find on your modem. Double check if imei is correct, because unlock code will be calculated by imei you enterred. Then press do job.

Unlock How-to (Was: Is it save to unlock E160 while being online with E160?)

Hi,

after all the support I received, now some feedback from my side how I successfully unlocked my E160 (actually a E160G), but that shouldn't matter here.


Prerequisites:

- Before you connect to the internet, note the IMEI of your mobile stick, it is laser-engraved on
the backside of the stick or you got it with the documentation of the stick
(This step is not mandatory, but you can verify what DC-unlocker later on reads out from your stick)

- download DC-unlocker
or have a terminal program ready where you can send out AT-commands via the virtual COMx connection to your modem.
(If you do not know what AT-commands are, better use the Codewriter program mentioned above)

- Buy credits, write down account data received and unblock your account via the link emailed to you

- install DC-unlocker
- install the unblock code writer


Unlocking:

1) Close internet connection, exit your internet access program, your mobile stick is available
now for other programs

2) use DC-unlocker to detect the modem and display IMEI number, verify that your modem is locked.

3) Keep DC-unlocker running, don't exit!!

4) unplug mobile stick by hand, wait some seconds

5) Plug-in mobile stick, now it is available again for your internet access program

6) Go back into the internet

7) Within DC-unlocker:
- with the account data received, login to the DC-unlocker server
- goto unlocking, Select "Generate unlocking code from IMEI"
- Watch and maybe verify the IMEI displayed with the number you noted in step 1)
- Click "Do the Job"
- Now, within a couple of seconds, you should receive your 8-digit unlock number from the
server plus the info that your credits are gone :-(
- Write down the unlock number

8) stop Internet connection, exit Internet access program

9) unplug mobile stick by Hand, remove sim-card, Plug-in mobile stick
(this step might not be necessary, I just did it)

Now there a two and maybe more ways to physically unblock your modem:

10) Use a terminal program and connect to the modem, check with some AT-commands, e.g. "AT i"
that you can "see" the modem. Issue the command AT^unlock="xxxxxxxx" where xxxxxxxx is the
unlocking code you received

10) Alternatively (this is proofen, I did it) use the HUAWEI Codewriter, let it detect your modem and
insert the unlocking code in the box that appears.
Hold your breath and click "unlock" ---> Tataa, your modem is unlocked!!!!!
(Hopefully, but it worked for me)

11) Doublecheck with DC-unlocker, it should report now that your modem is unlocked.
