B593: What are the advantages of unlocking?

I'm on a mission to find out why ports can't be opened in the B593 modem/router. There are options for this but it doesn't matter what ports I choose or if I activate DMZ - "port closed" when checking. I have found other people with the same problem.

Anyway, I found this site and it looks interesting. Does this only unlock the possibility to use SIM cards from other operators, or would this give me more control.. more options.. in the GUI? The B593u-12 is a piece of garbage right now, I hate it but I'm stuck with it...
