    I was trying to unlock the bootloader for the Huawei MediaPad T3 10 tablet with DC Unlocker, but it has failed with "Invalid command" error.

    Use HCU software which is made for mobiles/tablets: https://hcu-client.com/
    Mention what security patch your unit runs, you should be able to see it in same place as android version in device's settings.

      It's Android security patch 1 September 2018, will HCU work?
      BTW, HCU doesn't work on a virtual machine, which is the only thing I have got with Microsoft Windows running. Any workaround?

        Yes, it should work with this security patch and yes HCU does support this phone and may use same account on it. DC-unlocker doesn't work on VM as well, hence now explains why you get such random error. Sadly you need native Windows computer to work with either software.
