Please advise. I have tried to flash this phone many times using all your guides and different stock firmwares. The issue is always at file 5 PACKAGE_TYPE

Okay, that's a promising sign. Did you repair your mobile on HCU after flashing board software?

Repair UMTS tab and ticked following fields

Then it just means that current firmware you are trying to flash is not compatible for flashing on board software and you should try another one.

Ok, flashed with different firmware VNS-L31C900B172 which worked.

However build number is now ncorrect VNS-L31C432B172

How to fix that?

You mean the phone inside shows incorrect build or software detects? Could you add a screenshot of the About phone section from settings?

From release documents for C900B172 software it seems that is the correct build number VNS-L31C432B172 so that seems fine.

However, I want to upgrade this phone to Android 7 - Every C432 software I try to flash fails - tried a C440 software also.

Please help - must be a way to upgrade this phone.

Sadly we do not know the correct upgrade ways, there may be a small OTA in between 2 firmware versions as you can not just upgrade into whatever higher version you like usually. Upgrading from SD card with upgrade mode should be safe at least.
