U8180 puts in fastboot mode this way:
Turn off the phone. Then press Power shortly. Then press and HOLD Vol-, Menu and Power buttons until you see sand clock (or the phone completely hangs). This will enter to fastboot mode. Then connect your phone to computer and follow the rest of instructions.

      Huawei

I have tried to do this many times but every time the phone just starts up normally. How long should the initial press be? Do you have to wait to press the other buttons after the first press? I have tried both ways again without sucess. This is getting very frustrating as I really need to get this done quickly. Help please!!!

Try to restart your phone few times, reinsert its battery also.
        Then try again.

If it still does not work, could you try other button combinations?
Like Vol+, Menu, Power or Vol+, Vol-, Power, etc.

I managed to get the phone to 'hang' at start-up - it stops at the Orange square with 'Orange' inside. Never managed to get a 'sand clock' to come up. I previously downloaded and installed the driver package from Huawei and when I plugged the phone into the PC (after the above) it then installed another driver (fastboot I think). DC Unlocker clkient software then didn't find it. I got 'Phone not found' message - the same if I use Auto-detect or not. What have I done wrong and where do I go now please>

Sure you have followed this procedure: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/huawei_u8...lock_procedure
Also, do you see android ADB interface or anything similar in device manager after you connect phone to computer in fastboot mode?

Yes - so far as possible seeing as the controls are different; as already explained I haven't been able to get beyond the first step so far! Again, yes, the phone comes up (in Win 7) as 'Android 1.0' in Device manager with Name: Asus Android Bootloader Interface, Type: Android phone

Try to use driver from link I gave, not drivers that install automatic.

I dont understand you - in Windows 7 the drivers DO install automatically - that's what it says to do following the link?? And you get what I have - no Google driver appears, just the Asus one. I tried uninstalling the driver but it just reinstalled the same one again. I dont think it looks as if you can help with this phone unfortunately.

Could you try to manually install these drivers from the link?
                    Not choosing automatic install.
