What does the firmware code allow me to do

Hi,
I understand what the unlock does, but how about the firmware code. What can i do with a firmware code?

Also looking on DC Unlocker client there's a 'Flash' section what does this allow me to do?

It is allow you to change the fimware.When you are changing firmware of branded modem,it will ask you the firmware code to proceed.
