Can I leave SIM card in while unlocking?

Hi. I'm wanting to unlock my Sierra Wireless AirCard 880U.
The DC-Unlocker software tells me I need to remove the sim card before unlocking, which I did, but then I have no internet access, and then the DC-unlocker software can't connect to it's server to see whether I have credits or whatever else it needs to do.
How can I overcome this?
Can I unlock with the SIM still in?
What will happen if I do?

Yes, you need to remove sim.
You need to have other internet connection at unlock time (not same modem) Lan or wifi connection.
