  • Cannot detect MF91 using dc-unlock client 1.00.1066

I tried unlocking my ZTE MF91 but wasn't successful.

I installed the usb device driver, plugged in the device and see, in the device manager, the following relevant ZTE entries:

    DVD/CD-ROM drives
    - ZTE USB SCSI CD-ROM USB Device

    Network adapters
    - ZTE Mobile Broadband Network Adapter (driver version: 8.1064.0.2)

    Ports
    - ZTE Mobile Broadband AT Port (COM15)
    - ZTE Mobile Broadband Diagnostics Port (COM9)

Note that there is no ZTE entry under "Modems".

After quitting the ZTE software, I tried to autodetect the model by the dc-unlocker software as recommended (ZTE was chosen for the manufacturer), the following message was received:

    =================================

    DC - Unlocker 2 Client 1.00.1066

    Detecting modem :

    selection :
    manufacturer - ZTE modems
    model - Auto detect (recommended)

    Enabling ZTE modem driver... OK
    Waiting for ZTE modem...

    modem not found !

    =================================

    please advise.

Do you see cd-rom for this modem in my computer? If so, try to open it and install everything from it (software, drivers). Then restart computer and modem and try detecting again.

When I open the folder of the "ZTE drive", there is a file called "ZTE_Datacard_USB_Driver.exe" dated 2012-03-07 size 5271KB

Running that file to install the drivers seems to be the same as using the "autorun" file.

      I got the same result.

From the Driver Software Installation dialog box, I can see the followings installed:

      - USB Composite Device
      - ZTE Mobile Broadband Diagnostics Port (COM9)
      - ZTE Mobile Broadband AT Port (COM15)
      - ZTE Mobile Broadband Network Adapter
      - USB Mass Storage Device
      - ZTE USB SCSI CD-ROM USB Device
      - ZTE MMC Storage USB Device

There isn't any Model device installed!

The Network Adapter Driver details show:
      - Date 2011-09-23
      - Version 8.1064.0.2

      AT Port (COM15) properties:
      - Date: 2011-12-05
      - Version: 8.2088.0.1

      Diag Port (COM9) properties:
      - Date: 2011-12-05
      - Version: 8.2088.0.1

When I go to Programs and Features (Control Panel) to look at the 4G LTE Pocket Wi-Fi entry info, I find the product version as 8.2088.0.1B03.

Please let me know if this version of the driver installer and its associated driver versions are compatible with your version of dc-unlocker client software.

I also tried using the dc-unlock client to detect my other Huawei pocket wifi (already unlocked). The driver installation also similarly include CD-ROM/DVD drive, Network Adapter, Ports (one Application abd one Diagnostics). The port assignment is different from ZTE. The Huawei device uses Ports 4 and 5. There is NO modem driver installaton for the Huawei device either.

However, the client can detect the Huawei modem. Please see captured log below:

I tried installing the MF91 driver on a Win 7 desktop PC (previously, I tried that on notebooks with Vista and XP). Since there wasn't any peripherals taking up any COM ports, the drivers could now be installed the AT Port at COM3 and Diag at COM4. I thought it might help dc-unlocker to autodetect but it still didn't work.

Then I tried manually selecting the model as MF91 and after that the Application and Diagnostics Port entries are editable. I went on to select COM3 and 4 respectively. Now, pressing the magnifier (look-up) icon, dc-unlocker finally acknowledged the ZTE device's presence.

For correct ZTE modem detection, please plug modem with invalid operator SIM inserted. Wait till software starts the modem, close ZTE software and then you can detect modem with DC-Unlocker.

While I still don't understand why the dc-unlocker software cannot autodetect the ZTE MF91 on my PC and notebooks, this manual selection may help others who encounter similar problems.
