Tried again in Standard mode Select firmware APP, and check "Rescue recovery" & "Old slow algo" (for Kirin960).
Again I got the same error "Cannot update device in upgrade mode".

Then I tried to enter manual mode.
hold both vol buttons and connect device to cable, keep holding buttons ... but I didn't see Huawei logo...

Tried to update firmware with "Rescue Recovery" option on, and I got the following Error. And the phone stuck on Huawei logo.
I noticed that the connection is lost in device manager, no more Huawei com3.

Tried "MHA-L29_NV_Partition_backup.dgtks", and no error there.
Looks like it writes partition to the phone. Not sure what to do next.

Thanks so much for any comment!

Finally unbricked mate 9, and flushed emui 9.1.
            [1] Got MHA-L29_8.0.0.377(C567)-id44786.zip @ https://www.mobilebaz.com
[2] Extract the UPDATE.APP from the zip, and use that to update firmware in DC-Phoenix.
            Standard mode
            Bypass version check
            Old slow algo
[3] Process finished without issue. Now mate 9 is unbricked in EMUI8.0
            [4] Got MHA-L29_9.1.0.275(C432E7R1P8T8)-id49066.zip @ https://www.mobilebaz.com
[5] Extract the UPDATE.APP from the zip, and use that to update firmware in DC-Phoenix.
            Standard mode
            Bypass version check
            Old slow algo
[6] Process finished without issue, Now mate 9 is in EMUI9.1
