I'm trying to unlock a Huawei E585U-82 but keep getting the error "SIM Lock status : unknown(read failed)". This occurs regardless of what SIM is inside, but this is what I get with a foreign SIM:

I've successfully bought the right number of credits, which are recognised when I click on Check login.
The device is locked - it was sold to me as locked, and the correct SIM works while the foreign SIM I'm using gets an invalid SIM error.
Not sure what to, I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
